The course consists of the following six modules. Candidates should follow all the modules. The medium of instruction and examination shall be English.
Module 1 : An introduction to Biodiversity
Genetic, species and ecosystem diversity: Global patterns of distribution of biodiversity, biomes: Composition and distribution of biodiversity of Sri Lanka.
Module 2:Impacts on Biodiversity
Causes and consequences of biodiversity loss: Species extinctions
Module 3 : Biodiversity Assessment
Identification of plants and animals: Floral and faunal survey techniques, inventorying and monitoring of species and the use of diversity indices to assess habitats.
Module 4: Tools and Strategies of Biodiversity Management -Part I
Basic principles of biodiversity management - Introduction to sustainable development: Valuation of biodiversity: Integrated and adaptive management: Ecosystem and species approach: Ex-situ conservation: Protected Area Network of Sri Lanka: Assessing the status of species: Threats from invasive alien species.
Module 5: Tools and Strategies of Biodiversity Management -Part II
Basic economic principles related to management of biodiversity: National legislation, International conventions and treaties related to biodiversity conservation: Problems of law enforcement
Module 6 : Assignment
Literature survey, report writing and presentation on topics related to biodiversity conservation of Sri Lanka.
