           PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY

The four year degree program in Plant Biotechnology enhances the knowledge and lead to develop skills of the students specifically, in applied fields related to plant sciences and wide array of plant based industries.

Students are exposed to courses which give them a basic knowledge in both theoretical aspects as well as employment oriented courses such as Agro-Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, Horticulture, Food Science, Crop Protection and Post Harvest Technology etc. Industrial exposure and the relevant practical activities of the course modules advance their career opportunities by broadening their practical skills and understanding of this dynamic discipline.

           PLANT SCIENCE

Four year degree in Plant Science is a four year degree program offered by the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Colombo to expand the student’s knowledge, comprehension of the core concepts, developing skills and provide hands-on experiences in subjects directly related to plants, their natural environment and its function.

Apart from the basic core knowledge in botany gained during the first two years, students are exposed to subjects that give them an in-depth and broad perspective of the disciplines such as Environmental Science and Plant Ecology and Forest Science, Plant Systematics, Plant Breeding, Soil Science, Plant Diversity Management and Conservation etc. Fundamentals of advanced and novel fields related to Plant Sciences (eg. Molecular Systematics, Bioinformatics, Biodiversity Informatics, Multivariate Analyses in Biology) have been introduced. Field based activities and courses have significantly improved the effectiveness of this study program. Learning outcomes of the special degree in Plant Sciences offer career opportunities specifically in biodiversity related projects, wildlife management and conservation, forestry and forest based industries, plant research institutes and botanic gardens etc.

           BIOINFORMATICS

The special degree in Bioinformatics was introduced in 2006/2007 as a response to the current need in training biological science students in analysis and management of biological data using computer science and information technology. The University of Colombo is the first to introduce such a program in the university system in Sri Lanka.
The precursor to this program was the course on "Introduction to Bioinformatics" which was initiated by the Department of Plant Sciences in 2002.This newly emerged field in biosciences is applicable in a great variety of disciplines such as molecular biotechnology, drug designing and biodiversity conservation. This is a degree program consisting of course modules offered by Department of Plant Sciences, Department of Zoology and University of Colombo School of Computing.
