TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught numerous courses in Plant Sciences at undergraduate level ranging from Plant Pathology, Mycology, Microbiology, Microbial Life and Plant Anatomy.

At the post-graduate level apart from supervision of Ph.D. & M.Phil. students I have taught in M.Sc. programmes in Plant Pathology, Plant Cell & Tissue Culture, Microbiology and Agricultural Microbiology.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE / INTERESTS

(a)  Study of morphological, growth, physiological & biochemical characters of plant pathogenic fungi.

(b)  Studies of Post harvest diseases of selected tropical fruits.

(c)  Evaluation of disease control methods.

(d)  Anti-microbial activity of chemicals from medicinal plants and other natural sources.

(e)  Use of molecular biological techniques to determine variability amongst fungal isolates and to detect presence of plant pathogenic fungi.

(f)  Investigation of biological activity in fungal metabolites.

The research programmes were/are supported by the National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka, Council for Agricultural Research & Policy, Sri Lanka, Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka, International Science Foundation, Sweden and the University of Colombo.

My research involved close collaborations with research institutes and addressed specific problems faced by Sri Lankan plantation industry & agriculture. The work has resulted in Presidential Awards, many publications in peer reviewed journals (listed below) and capacity building through production of several Ph.Ds and M.Phils.
