Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at University of Colombo. Here you will find information on the department's undergraduate and graduate programs, course offerings, faculty research interests, facilities and departmental events.
The study of chemistry is one of the best ways that you can come to understand your universe. It affords an insight into the working of the physical world that is hidden to the ordinary person and provides a foundation for work in many different areas. In chemistry, we investigate the molecular world -- enzymes, atmospheric gases, semiconductors, catalysts, dyes, neurotransmitters, carbohydrates, drugs, pheromones and polymers. Our tools and methods include chemical synthesis, spectroscopy, computational modelling, and diverse suite of instrumentation. At Colombo, Chemistry is at the heart of the molecular sciences, and our department conducts five special degree programs: in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, Pharmacy and Computational Chemistry. We also incorporate Biophysical and Medicinal Chemistry, Nanoscience and Materials Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry into our chemistry program. This training will provide a solid educational foundation for careers in Chemistry and related fields. The Department of Chemistry at Colombo University has 22 full time senior faculty members, 4 lecturers, 24 assistant lecturers and demonstrators, and other support staff. The department provides quality education and its chemistry and other graduates are in demand by local industry and foreign universities. The Chemistry Department maintains continuing relationships with many industries in Sri Lanka and provides Industrial Training for all special degree graduates. All special degree graduates carry out a full one year research project under the supervision of a senior faculty member. We also have Master of Science program in three different areas in chemistry. If you are interested in a chemistry-related profession, Colombo University is an excellent choice. Contact the chemistry department office at 2503367 for more information and to schedule an appointment with our Academic Advisor.
