Chemical analysis is widely applied in
industry, agriculture, medicine (medical diagnosis),
forensic science, archaeology, geology and in scientific research. The
accuracy of the final figure reported after a chemical analysis is important.
The analytical inaccuracy of results may lead to decisions which could be
detrimental to the development of a country. Therefore, chemical analysis
holds an important position in the economic development of our modern
society. In Sri Lanka, chemical analysis is very often
entrusted to personnel who handle analysis as an art and their knowledge is
only confined to the set procedure. The problems leading to inaccurate
results cannot be solved by these personnel due to the lack of their
knowledge in the theoretical basis of the procedure. It is essential to train
personnel who possess a sound knowledge of procedures and an adequate
training on the laboratory work. Such a person is called an Analytical
Chemist, who will undoubtedly produce accurate results.
The aim of the M.Sc.
(Analytical Chemistry) is to train graduates to become analytical chemists since
the undergraduate courses in Sri
Lanka are not designed to achieve
this objective. The analytical chemist could assist in solving problems in
the routine analytical procedures which would have led to inaccurate results.
The accurate results produced by an analytical chemist will help the
authorities to draw conclusions on the correct path. Thus, he/she plays an
important role in our industrial structure and the advancing science, such
that without his/her service our present day economy could not exist.
DURATION
Master of Science
|
This is offered in two parts. The part A Consists of theory modules and
practical modules conducted on Friday evenings (5 - 7 pm) and Saturdays (8
am to 6 pm). The duration of part A is for two semesters (each having 20
weeks). Students who have achieved the minimum requirements in the part A
will be allowed to proceed to part B. This consists of a full-time
research project of 8 month duration. The duration for part-time students
is longer, depending on the time they modules / sub modules are allowed to
devote for research. |
Certificate
Course
|
Students can offer any one or
more modules / sub modules listed under the course content (3) each theory
module includes approximately 45 hours of lectures and other teaching
activities as appropriate. Computer application module is for 30 hours and
the two practical modules / sub modules have 90 hours laboratory work. |
COURSE EVALUATION
Master of Science
Part A
|
Throughout the first year,
students will be assessed both on continuous basis as well as by
periodical tests mainly based on the laboratory work carried out during
the course. There will be a written examination for theory modules at the
end of the first year. The written examination will consist of five
question papers of 3 hour duration. Candidates will be allowed to proceed
to part B when he/she has obtained a minimum GPA of 3.00. |
Part B
|
The research dissertation
submitted by the candidate at the end of the project will be evaluated and
an oral examination will be held on the dissertation. |
Certificate Course
No course evaluation is
conducted.
