Special Degree Programs Offered by the Department of Chemistry
University of Colombo
The special degree in Chemistry is in existence since 1942
The special degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry is in existence since 1998 – From 2006 the students will be selected from Direct intake of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
The special degree in Chemical Biology will be introduced in 2007
The special degree in Pharmacy commenced 2000
The special degree in Computational Chemistry commenced in 2005
There is much competition to be selected to these degree programs due to its high recognition but limited places. Selection and is based on the performance at the first and second year examinations.
The focus of all these special degree programs is to produce graduates i) possessing an advanced and updated knowledge in the respective fields of study ii) portraying individualism, originality and self reliance. The study programs are designed so as to enhance communication skills, writing ability, presentation skills and to gear the student towards independent research.
A special degree in Chemistry and in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology enables the student to find easy entry to Universities in foreign countries to pursue post graduate studies. A student possessing a special degree in Chemistry and in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is much sought out by many an industry, research institutes and state sector institutions in Sri Lanka, with opportunities to pursue higher studies in accordance with the specialized needs of the institution. Obtaining postgraduate qualifications from a foreign University would enable these students to seek employment as Senior Lecturers in the widely expanding university system in Sri Lanka.
A graduate with a special degree in Pharmacy could pursue post graduate studies in a foreign University. With postgraduate qualifications graduates have the opportunity to find employment as academics in the new pharmacy programmes that are schedule to commence within the university system of Sri Lanka. They could also find employment in the Health ministry in Sri Lanka . There is a heavy demand for pharmacy graduates from pharmaceutical companies and pharmaceutical industries.
The University of Colombo is the only university that offers a special degree in computational chemistry. We expect the special degree graduates in Computational Chemistry to be adequately equipped to follow postgraduate degree programs in foreign Universities in the areas of Bio-informatics, molecular modeling and drug design and many other rapidly progressing areas related to theoretical chemistry. Computer Application is a rapidly progressing area in chemistry. All branches of chemistry are now intermingled with computer software usage. We expect our graduates to be able to harness the power of computer to all areas of chemistry as well as to get training in development of dedicated software packages. This will no doubt make our graduates highly marketable in the chemistry related and IT industries.
