Introduction    
This course is designed for students who have sat their advanced level examination. The objective of this course is to provide basic knowledge together with some hands-on experience in electronics and automation technology.
     
Eligibility and Admission Criteria
1. Applicants should have sat for advanced level examination with Physics as a subject
2. Applicants are required to sit for an aptitude test conducted by the Department of Physics
3. Maximum of 80 students will be selected for the course

Syllabus

[A] Theory Course [45 hours, 3 credits]

1. Analogue Electronics
Introduction to electronic/electrical components and test equipment, Linear circuit theory, Diode types and their applications, Introduction to diacs, and triacs, Transistors and their applications, Operational amplifiers and their applications, Sensors and Transducers

2. Digital Electronics
Basic Logic Gates, Combination Logic Circuit Designing, Flip-Flops,Clock signal Generation for Digital Circuits

3. Working Principles and Applications of some popular ICs
78xx & 79xx Voltage regulators,LM 317 Voltage regulator,555 IC

4. Introduction to power electronics
Speed Controlling of a DC motor, varying the drawing current, Speed Controlling of a DC motor using PWM, Stepper Motor Driving

5. Introduction to PC programming, and PC port controlling
Basics of sequential programming, Parallel port programming

[B] Laboratory work [60 hours, 2 credits]

Laboratory experiments are design to cover the theory course and some other titles such as Test equipment, Power supply, Circuit board design and construction, Sensors and Transducers, Combinational and Sequential logic circuits, Parallel port programming, and one mini-project.

Application can be obtained from the office of the Department of Physics or can be downloaded from the Department web site. Hand over duly filled application together with bank draft of Rs. 500/- drawn in favour of University of Colombo (Payments can also be maid to the Office of the Physics Department), to the Office of the Department.

Deadline for application for aptitude test is the 18th of October, 2007. Aptitude test will be held on 28th of October 2007.

Maximum of 80 will be selected on merit basis, among the candidates who get through the aptitude test.

Payment of Rs. 18,000/- must be maid on or before the 31st of October, 2007 in order to confirm the registration, those who selected.
