Research Strengths

Department of Physics, University of Colombo, is one of the leading institutes for training physicists in Sri Lanka. It has major research programs in the areas of Mass Spectroscopy Instrumentation, Atmospheric and Lightning Physics, and Solar Energy Instrumentation.

The first two programs are supported by International Science Program (ISP) of the Uppsala University. In addition, all these programs draw local funding from National Science Foundation.

Through these research programs the Department has developed a high level of expertise in instrumentation.

Infrastructure

The Department of Physics already has an electronic workshop manned by two electronic technicians. This facility will be further developed and will be used for the projects undertaken by the Centre.

The mechanical workshop and glass blowing unit of the Department of Physics is a well-equipped facility available for the Centre. It is managed by a mechanical engineer and its staff has experience in the development of scientific instruments for teaching and research.

In addition, sophisticated equipment owned by the Faculty of Science, some of which were donated under the JICA program, can be utilized, in collaboration with the departments that manage them.

International Links

Department of Physics is fortunate to have a strong research link with University of Uppsala – one of the most prestigious universities in Scandinavian region.

The Atmospheric and Lightning Physics group and the Mass Spectrometry group at this department were initiated with the assistance of the International Science Program (ISP), which is an institute of the Uppsala University.

These support extended by the Uppsala University includes postgraduate training in their laboratories, supply of research equipment and other materials, and the development of research infrastructure at University of Colombo.

The link with Uppsala has so far produced 9 Ph.D.s through a split-type program. Extreme generosity in transferring ultra-modern technological know-how and genuine desire to see the advancement of research activities has been a unique feature of this program.
