Fields of Specialization & Research Interests
Mechanistic studies of fast heavy ion induced desorption (i.e. electronic sputtering) of solids:
(i) Measurements of the structural parameters of the radiation damage tracks on insulating surfaces, using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)- a novel near- field scanning probe technique having atomic resolution.

(ii) Characterization of photons emitted from organic (especially biomolecules) and inorganic compounds due to fast heavy ion impact.

Mass spectrometry applications of fast heavy ion/photon induced desorption:
(i) Development of plasma desorption mass spectrometry (PDMS) and Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation (MALDI) mass spectrometry facilities at the Department of Physics of the University of Colombo.
(ii) The application of PDMS to natural product compounds isolated from medicinal plants & Organic metal complexes.
