Services - Molecular Desorption Mass Spectrometry

Molecular Desorption Mass Spectrometry Our group has two types of mass spectrometers. Namely

• Plasma desorption mass spectrometer
• Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometers

coupled with time-of-flight (TOF) mass analyzers.

Mass Analysis
Plasma desorption mass spectrometer
Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry (PDMS) facility is available for mass analysis of organic and inorganic compounds. This technique is specially suitable for thermally labile and non-volatile organic compounds such as amino acids and peptides. A very small amount of sample ( a few micro grams ) is adequate for the analysis, provided it is in the form of solid.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometers
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) facility is available for mass analysis of organic and inorganic compounds. This technique is specially suitable for thermally labile, heavy non-volatile bio-molecules such as polymers (e.g. proteins, DNA). A very small amount of sample ( a few micro grams ) is adequate for the analysis, provided it is in the form of solid.

Irradiation of solid surfaces
A facility for irradiating solid surfaces by 252 Cf fission fragments (approx. 1M eV/u ) is available. The samples to be irradiated should preferably be in the form of thin plates. They should withstand high vacuum conditions. Irradiating time should be varied according to the necessity.
