Success in the past
The faculty of science has conducted various successful projects in the past. Very brief overviews of some of those projects are listed below.
Design and fabrication of laboratory equipments
At the Department of Chemistry we have manufactured water baths, hot plate/stirrers, melting point apparatus and orbital shakers for institutions in Sri Lanka. The photographs of these equipments are given below.
A solar energy drying system
Environment friendly standalone solar powered drying chambers have been developed by the Centre for Instrument Development, Department of Physics, for drying of agricultural produce and other materials. Capacity of the system is virtually 'unlimited'.
Microbiological analysis
We can identify what you cannot see from the naked eye! The Department of Plant Sciences has successfully carried out evaluation of
anti—microbial activity, microbicidal effects, determination of fungal
contaminants of products of leading establishments in Sri Lanka. Further,
the Department has provided advice to Horticulturists in management of Plant
diseases.
IEEs and EIAs
Academic staff members of the Department of Zoology have
successfully carried out many IEEs and EIAs for major
developmental projects. These include infrastructure development such as
roads, ports, airports and power plants. They have also taken part in post
tsunami environmental assessments and investigated environmental impacts of
tsunami reconstruction efforts and of dam rehabilitation. A number of
academics of the department contributed to the Biodiversity Baseline Survey
of the Protected Area Management and Wildlife Conservationa Project of the
Department of Wildlife Conservation that covered a majority of the protected areas in the country.
Human Rights Accountability Coalition Project of The Asia Foundation, Sri Lanka
“The Mapping Political and Ethnic Violence in Sri Lanka”
The Project was funded by the, Danish Development Corporation (DADECO)
The overall goal of “The Mapping Political and Ethnic Violence in Sri Lanka” Project was to build the capacity of Sri Lankan human rights organizations to use more effective quantitative and qualitative tools for monitoring and reporting incidents and trends/patterns of past and current human rights violations in ways that are scientifically rigorous, accurate, objective, consistent and most importantly, credible to both internal and external stakeholders. It will also seek to establish a massive, objective and undeniable statistical record of past and present human rights violations in Sri Lanka.
DC magnetic field measurements
We have issued test report to Unilever Sri Lanka Ltd – Tea Division at No. 242, Union Place, Colombo 02, on DC magnetic field measurements for their different types of magnets fixed at tea production lines to improve the quality of the production. We have the facility and expertise to conduct DC magnetic field measurements and provide consultation on the same field.
Conduct surge protection tests and provide consultation on design surge protectors
We have issued test reports to Lyman Alpha Power Solutions (pvt) Ltd, 57, New Jayaweera Mawatha, Ethul Kotte, on Maximum Clamping voltage test and Maximum Surge Current test under 8/20 µs Impulse condition, Surge protector Self-Capacitance, Surge protector Loop Resistance, Surge protector Insertion Loss for their locally designed lightning surge protectors. We are the only institute in Sri Lanka who has the facility and expertise to conduct surge protection tests and provide consultation on design surge protectors and insulation coordination and grounding measurement and treatments.

A successful project with a leading chemical company in Sri Lanka
What if we can convert waste into to something useful?
The Department of Chemistry, University of Colombo has established a procedure to make something very useful using the waste produced at this chemical company. We are sure that these types of projects will help companies in obtaining ISO certification.
Undertaking a project on behalf of Dipped Products PLC
Testing of commonly used commodity; gloves
This work involved evaluating gloves for suitability for food contact applications using chemical and physical methods after exposure to food stimulants adapted from procedures described in BS/EN1186.
Our results matched the company expectations and they were pleased with the outcome of this project. The project was conducted at the Department of Chemistry, University of Colombo.
Technology transfer fee
Industries are encouraged to request development of new technologies which will be accepted depending on the infrastructure and the expertise available at the time of request. A technology transfer fee will be levied when transferring the technology which will vary depending on the level of support obtained from the sponsor for the work done.

Identifying intellectual property opportunities
The basic aim of the University's intellectual property policies is to promote the progress of science and technology, to assure that discoveries and inventions are used to benefit the public, to provide appropriate royalty revenues to the University and the inventor, and to support University research and education through the use of invention-related income.
The University will grant to the sponsor right to negotiate an exclusive or nonexclusive license, based upon the level of sponsor support. In the event of a technology transfer a payment must be paid to the University in order to transfer the technology.
Payments. Payments are negotiable as both direct and indirect costs are involved in some of these projects. All projects will require an advance payment to start the work. Upon successful completion of consultancy and sample analysis, outcome will be handed over upon the receipt of the full payment. |
