Survey of Health Issues Pertaining to Internal Migration, Sri Lanka - Dr. Swarna Ukwatta, Prof. K. A. P. Siddhisena and Dr. E.L.S.L. Perera

The Department of Demography conducted the research on ‘Health issues pertaining to internal migration in Sri Lanka’ with the financial assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and under guidance of the Ministry of Health. The prime objective of the study was to understand the health issues pertaining to labour migrants who work in the Export Processing Zones (EPZs), students (both school children and university students) and seasonal workers, especially the agricultural workers, in Sri Lanka. Mixed methodological approach was used in this study to collect and analyze data. Sample size of the study consisted of 1000 EPZ workers, students and seasonal workers covering five districts of the country namely Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Galle and Anuradhapura. The findings of the study were presented at the National Scientific Symposium on Migrant Health and Development on 13th October 2011 at Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo.
