Department of Political Science

& Public Policy

The Dept. of Political Science and Public Policy is a relatively new academic department in the University of Colombo. It was established in October 2001 by bifurcating the Dept. of History and Political Science. The Department’s vision is: “Cultivating Critical Knowledge for Constructive Social and Political Change”. Currently, Mr.Mahesh Senanayake serves as the Head of Department.
The Department conducts undergraduate programs in Sinhalese and Tamil media. English Medium students are encouraged to write their examinations, assignments etc. in the English medium. We collaborate with the Dept. of Sociology and the Dept. of History and International relations in offering some of our course modules.

A variety of undergraduate courses are offered in the following areas within the broad discipline of Political Science:

·        Comparative Politics
·        Conflict and Peace Studies
·        Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues
·        Gender Studies
·        Public Policy and Governance
·        South Asian and World Politics
·        Sri Lankan Politics
·        Philosophy and Methods in Social Science Research

The department has two post graduate programs.

1. Traditional Master Degree Program
2.NORAD’S Program for Master Studies (NOMA)
NOMA master program is two-year program by course work and research, with the thematic emphasis on "Democracy, Governance and Conflict." Initiated in 2009 collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo, Norway. This program is the main component in a tripartite cooperation between University of Colombo, University of Oslo, Norway, and University of Gadja Mada, Indonesia.
The collaboration seeks to promote post-graduate education, research and research capacity building in Political Science from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The courses are offered only in the English medium.

The academic staff of the department consists of two professors, seven senior lecturers, one lecturer and four temporary assistant lecturers
