Inauguration Ceremony - MA in Sinhala 2017/2018

The Inauguration Ceremony of MA in Sinhala 2017/2018 was held on 11th March 2017 at the M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium of Department of Sinhala.

Professor Premakumara De Silva, Department of Sociology delivered the Key note speech. Emeritus Professors J. B. Dissanayake, Kusuma Karunarathne, Rohini Paranavithana and Professor Athula Ranasinghe - Dean, Faculty of Arts, Senior Lecturer Latha Gurusinghe - Head, Department of Sinhala, Professor Sandagomi Coparahewa - Coordinator, MA in Sinhala also attended the function.





Inauguration Ceremony of Diploma in Sinhala 2017 / 2018

The inauguration ceremony of the Diploma in Sinhala programme, was held on 4th March 2017, at the M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. Mr Saman Panapitiya - Senior Lecturer, University of Performance and Fine Arts, delivered a special speech for diploma candidates.





A Book Launch "Sahiththya Mavuu Gahaniya"

The launch of "Sahiththya Mavuu Gahaniya", written by Senior Lecturer - Ms. Latha Gurusinghe (Head - Department of Sinhla) was held on 07th February 2017, at 3.00 pm in the M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala.

This ceremony was chaired by Emeritus Professor J. B. Dissanayake and the key note address was delivered by Dr. Subhangi Herath - Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology.



Stage Drama Festival - 2016

Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo organizes a Stage Drama Festival from 28th November to 2nd December 2016 at the New Arts Theater (NAT), University of Colombo. The following stage dramas will be staged:


Awards Ceremony - Dean's Literary Awards Competition 2016

The Awards Ceremony of the Dean's Literary Awards Competition - 2016 , which was organized by the Department of Sinhala and the Dean’s office, Faculty of Arts, was held on 24th November, 2016 at the New Arts Theatre from 3.00pm onwards. The Keynote speech was delivered by the award winning writer Professor Liyanage Amarakeerthi, Department of Sinhala, University of Peradeniya.

The literary competitions were held under nine categories as Poetry, Essays, Lyrics, Literary Criticism, Novels, Short Stories, Short Plays and Photographs. This contest was open for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year undergraduates of the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo.





Annual Research Symposium - Department of Sinhala - 2016

The 6th Annual Research Symposium was held on 10th November 2016 from 8.30 am onwards at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala- UOC. The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Asanga Thilakarathne, Buddhist studies Unit, University of Colombo.

Guest Lecture on 'Mental Issues faced by Youth'

The Department of Sinhala organized a Guest Lecture on 'Mental Issues faced by Youth', on 23rd August 2016, at 10.00 am in the M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium. The lecture will be delivered by Dr: N. Kumaranayke.





China – Sri Lanka Cultural Festival

The Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo organized a Cultural Festival on 9th August 2016 at 6.10 pm in the New Arts Theatre, University of Colombo, with the participation of visiting Chinese students who are currently studying Sinhala language and culture, at the Department of Sinhala.

This event was organized in collaboration with the Cultural Center of the University of Colombo. There were traditional Chinese folk drama and other cultural items in this festival. The festival provided an opportunity to foster China- Sri Lanka inter cultural understanding among the Sri Lankan University students.





Dean’s Trophy Literary Awards - 2016

According to a concept of the Dean - Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, the Department of Sinhala organized the Dean’s Trophy Literary Awards for the fourth time in 2016. The literary competitions will be held under nine divisions as Poetry, Essays, Lyrics, Literary Criticism, Novels, Short Stories, Short Plays and Photographs (size A4 )

The contest is opened to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year undergraduates of the Faculty of Arts - UOC. Applications can be sent in Sinhala, Tamil or English medium, and all creative work with completed applications must be forwarded to the Library, Department of Sinhala on or before 05th August 2016.

Professer M. B. Ariyapala Commemoration Ceremony

The Department of Sinhala organized a ceremony to commemorate the 100th Birth Anniversary of late Professor M.B Ariyapala who was a former Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo and The pioneer Head of Sinhala Department, University of Colombo on 1st of June 2016 from 9.30 am at M.B Ariyapala Auditorium the Department of Sinhala.

Emeritus Professor J.B. Dissanayaka chaired the ceremony and three special lectures on Professor Ariyapala were delivered by Professor K.D Paranavithana, Professor K.N.O. Darmadasa and Professor Ananda Tissa Kumara.




Low Country - Kolam Drama Festival

The Department of Sinhala, Faculty of Arts, organized festival of low country Traditional Kolam Dramas on 26th of May 2016 from 7.30 p.m onwords (till the following morning) at the university ground. popular and ancient Kolam dramas such as

  • Maname Kolama
  • Karapita Kolama
  • were played.


Farewell Ceremony of the First Batch of visiting Chinese scholars (2015/16)

The farewell ceremony of the first batch of visiting Chinese students (2015/16), Department of Sinhala - University of Colombo was held on 20th May 2016 from 3.00 pm onwards at M.B Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala.

These scholars who visited from Beijing Foreign Studies University - China have been studying Sinhala at Sinhala Department - University of Colombo since December 2015 and they have successfully completed their Six month Training Course in Sinhala conducted by the Department of Sinhala. Sinhala Department wishes them all success in their future endeavor.





Rathnawali Drama : An evening of music

The Department of Sinhala is organizing an evening of music from the drama Rathnawali, on 30th March 2016 from 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm at M. B. Ariyapala Hall, Department of Sinhala.




Launch of a "Dictionary of Sinhala Spelling"

Sinhala Akshara Vinyasa Akaradiya ( A Dictionary of Sinhala Spelling) complied by Prof. Sandagomi Coperahewa, Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo will be launched on 31st March 2016, 3.00 pm at the M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo. Emiritus Professor J.B Disanayaka will preside at the occasion and Mr. Jayath Piyadasun (Editorial Staff, Silumina) and Mr. Dhamma Dissnayake (Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Political Science and Public Policy, University of Colombo) will make short presentations. This revised fourth edition of Sinhala Akshara Vinyasa Akaradiya is a Godage Publication and it provides an updated, alphabetically y arranged spelling list for Sinhala language users.




A Course on Sinhala Language and Culture for Visiting Chinese Students

A Six month course on Sinhala Language and Culture for the second batch of visiting Chinese Students was commenced on 09th March 2016. The inauguration ceremony of the course was held from 10.00 a.m. at the board room-Department of Sinhala. A special course including four modules (Sinhala Written Composition, Practice in Reading and Listening, Proficiency in Sinhala Speaking and Introduction to Sinhala Culture) has been designed to enhance Sinhala language proficiency of the scholars. All the visiting scholars are warmly welcomed by the Department of Sinhala.

Inauguration ceremony of the Diploma in Sinhala Programme - 2016, was held on 20th February 2016 from 9.30 am onwards at M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. Professor Asanga Thillekeratne - Cooridnator - Buddhist Studies Unit, Faculty of Arts, was the guest speaker. Prof. Athula Ranasinghe - Dean, Faculty of Arts, Ms. Latha Gurusinghe - Head, Department of Sinhala and Mr. Premasiri Nagasinghe - Co-ordinator - Diploma in Sinhala programme were there in the inauguration ceremony.







A book launch - Vaayaama

The Department of Sinhala with the collaboration of the Sinhala Society, organized the launch of Vaayaama - a collection of academic articles and creative writing, on 10th February 2016 at 2.00 pm, at the M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium.

The guest speaker was Mr. Chinthaka Ranasinghe - Lecturer, University of Kelaniya.





Guest Lecture by Mr. Dharmasiri Bandaranayaka

The Department of Sinhala, Faculty of Arts together with Sinhala Society , organized a guest lecture by famous artist Mr. Dharmasiri Bandaranayaka on 2nd February 2016 from 3.00 pm onwards at M.B.Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. Dharmasiri Bandaranayaka’s Hansa Vilak film was also screened on the same day at 1.00 pm at M.B Ariyapala Auditorium.



Sinhala Society - 2016

The Sinhala Society of University of Colombo was re-established for the year 2016 under the guidance of Ms. Latha Gurusinghe, The Head, Department of Sinhala. The society hopes to organize several functions and events with the new office bearers.






Ms. Irina successfully completed Sinhala Language Training Course

Ms. Irina Thakur, visiting Indian scholar who works at Indian High Commission successfully completed the Training Course in Sinhala Language at Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo. The training course contained four course units which are Sinhala Written Composition, Sinhala Speaking, Practice in Sinhala Reading and Listening and Introduction to Sinhala Culture. At the end of the course, Ms. Irina achieved satisfactory competency in Sinhala writing, reading, listening and speaking. In her speech made at the farewell, Irina conveyed her gratitude to all the lecturers who guided her to reachher achievements. Dinithi Uthpala Ranasinghe, Assistant lecturer, Department of Sinhala was the coordinator of this training course.

Annual Research Symposium - 2015

New Trends in Sinhala Literature, Language and Cultural Studies

The 5th Annual Research Symposium was held on 03rd November 2015 from 8.oo am onwards at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala- UOC. The keynote was delivered by Senior Professor Raj Somadewa, Post Graduate Institute of Archeology, University of Kelaniya.

Sinhala Diploma Award Ceremony

Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo conducted its 2nd Diploma Award Ceremony on 28th May 2015 at the Senate Hall, UOC. The event commenced with the presence of Prof. Lalitha Mendis (Competent Authority -UOC), Prof. Nayani Melagoda (Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts-UOC), Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana Thero (The Head- Department of Sinhala) and Mr. Premasiri Nagasinhe (The Coordinator- Sinhala Diploma Programme). The key note address was delivered by Prof. Jayadewa Uyangoda, Department of Political Science and Public Relations. This was a colorful occasion and thirty six academics awarded their Diploma certificates.

Literary Discussion on Thun Pethi Hathara Pas Pethi

A literary discussion on Thun Pethi Hathara Pas Pethi poetry collection (by Ariyawansa Ranaweera and Nandana Weerasinghe) was held on 8th June 2015 from 2. 00 p.m. onwards at M.B Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala - UOC.

The guest lecture will be made by Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Senior lecturer - University of Sabaragamuwa. This event is organized by Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo.




Syllabus Review

The Department of Sinhala - UOC reviewed all course units offered by the department for the new academic year, 2015/2016. Accordingly the course units will be offered under the following streams;

I. Language and Linguistics

II. Modern literature and criticism

III. Classical literature and criticism

IV. Culture,Arts and crafts

The initial discussion of this programme was held on 31st March 2015 at Vijaya Holiday resort - Kiriella with the presence of the academic staff of Sinhala department.

Inauguration ceremony of the 4th batch (academic year 2015/2016) of M.A in Sinhala programme, University of Colombo was held on 28th February2015 from 9.00 am onwardsat M.B Ariyapala Auditorium- Department of Sinhala.Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana Thero (The Head of the Department of Sinhala) made the welcome speech and Prof. Athula Ranasinghe (The Dean, Faculty of Arts-UOC) delivered the key note address.Emeritus Professor J.B. Hemapala Wijewardhane Memorial Debating Competition - 2015

Sinhala Society - Department of Sinhala will be organizing the Hemapala Wijewardhane Memorial Debating Competition - 2015 for the second time. This will be organizing as an inter-department competition and 6 teams from departments of Sociology, Economics, Demography, Political Science and Public Relations, International Relations and Sinhala - UOC are contesting.

The first round of this contest was commenced between the Department of Economics and the Department of Sociology on 22nd January 2015. The final round will be held on 18th February 2015, from 12.00 pm onwards at M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala.




W. A Silva 125th Birth Anniversary

Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo in collaboration with W.A Silva Foundation, organizes a special seminar to remark the 125th Birth Anniversary of renowned Sinhala writer- W. A. Silva on 10th February 2015 from 2.00 p.m onwards at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium-Department of Sinhala. There will be speeches by Prof. Sarath Wijesooriya, Prof. Rathasiri Arangala, Dr. Sandagomi Coperahewa and Senior Lecturer Ms. Latha Gurusinghe. All are invited for the event.




Sinhala Diploma Programme 2015

Inauguration ceremony of the third batch of Sinhala Diploma Programme University of Colombo was held on 3rd January 2015 from 9.00 am onwards at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. Emeritus Professor Wimal Wijeratne made the guest speech and Prof. Kumara Hirimburegama (the Vice Chancellor, UOC), Prof. Rev. Vijithapure Wimalaratana(Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts), Prof. Rev. Agalakada Sirisumana (the Head, Department of Sinhala) also took part in the event.








Pirith Chanting Ceremony

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Sinhala, a Pirith Chanting Ceremony was held on 18th December all over the night and alms giving on the following morning (19th) at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala.

It was expected to wish best to the souls of the prominent academics of the department late Professor M.B. Ariyapala, Professor Hemapala Wijewardane, Professor Piyaseeli Wijegunasinghe and Mr. A.B. Disanayake and others who have committed their service for the department. This event is being organized by the Department of Sinhala under the patronage of Ven. Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana, the Head of the Department. All are invited to share the merits and obtain blessings.

Guti Kemata Niyamithai stage drama was staged on 26th November 2014 at 3.00 p.m. at the New Arts Theatre - University of Colombo. This event was organized by the Sinhala Society - Department of Sinhala under the sponsorship of The Art Council (Kala Mandalaya) - University of Colombo.

Chamila Priyankara’s Meya Thuwakkuwak Nove stage drama was staged on 5th November 2014 at 3.00 p.m. at the New Arts Theatre - University of Colombo.

Sinhala Society - University of Colombo

The Sinhala Society of University of Colombo was re-established for the year 2014 - 2015 under the guidance of Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana Thero, The Head, Department of Sinhala. New office bearers for the year were selected on 27th October 2014 at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. The society hopes to organize several functions and events such as monthly academic lectures, Weekly film screenings and publishing academic periodicals.






Anagarika Dharmapala 150th Birth Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony

There was a commemorative speech on 30th October 2014 from at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium - Department of Sinhala to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Anagarika Darmapala. Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa, Journalism Unit, University of Kelaniya was chaired the event and the keynote address was delivered by Mr. Edwin Ariyadasa, renowned journalist. A short film on the life of Anagarika Darmapala was also screened. This event was organized by the Department of Sinhala.




A Book Launch - Vimasum Dhara

The launch of Vimasum Dhara,a collection of articles by Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana Thero, the Head of the Department of Sinhala , University of Colombo was held on 21st October 2014 from 3.00onwards at M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. Karunadasa Sooriyarachchi, renowned journalist chaired the event and a special guest lecture was delivered by Prof. Darshana Rathnayaka, Department of Sinhala, University of Kelaniya. A series of articles on classical Sinhala literature written for Silumina newspaper by Sirisumana Thero is included in this book. Vimasum Dhara is a Sarasavi Publication.

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2014 - A Success

The Department of Sinhala successfully hosted the second undergraduate research symposium on 16th of September 2014 at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala. The inauguration ceremony commenced at 9.30 a.m. with the presence of Prof. Athula Ranasinghe, the Dean- Faculty of Arts. Prof. Agalakada SirisumanaThero,the Head of the Department of Sinhala made the welcome speech.TheKeynote Address, titled A review of knowledge production was delivered by Prof.Asanga Thilakaratne- Pali and Buddhist unit,University of Colombo. There were three sessions chaired by three Emeritus professors, Language Studies by Emeritus Professor J. B.Dissanayake, Literature Studies by Emeritus Professor Kusuma Karunaratne and Cultural and Folklore Studies by Emeritus Professor Rohini Paranawithana.

This Symposium was organized with the intention of enhancing undergraduates research abilities and enthusiasm on research culture. The event was coordinated by Dinithi Ranasinghe and Indunil Piyarathna, Assistant Lecturers of the department, under the guidance of Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana Thero and Dr. Sandagomi Cooperahewa, Senior Lecturer - Department of Sinhala.






"Charandas" Stage Drama

Charandas – award winning stage drama by Parakrama Niriella was staged on 13th August 2014 at 3.00p.m. at New Arts Theatre – University of Colombo. Tickets are available at the Department of Sinhala, Students’ Welfare Office, Marshal’s Office andStudents’ Counseling Office


This event was organized by the Department of Sinhala under the sponsorship of “Kala Mandalaya”-University of Colombo.





"Mudu Puttu" Stage Drama

Gunasena Galappatty’s Mudu Puttu stage drama was staged on 6th August 2014 at 3.00 p.m. at the New Arts Theater – University of Colombo.


Writing to Daily News, (1962 May) Donald Abeysinghe says that “The universality of the theme would have no doubt been preserved for it ultimately remains a statement on the human condition – the human predicament. Whereas Lorca uses children of the soil, tillers of the land to bring out his theme of life and death, Galappatty finds in the sea a symbol that is traditionally and philosophically oriental-yet rather pessimistic view…”

This event was organized by the Department of Sinhala under the sponsorship of “Kala Mandalaya”-University of Colombo.


LEELA - Centenary Commemoration (1914-2014)

To remark the centenary of the publication of renowned writer Martin Wikramasingha’s first novel “Leela” (1914), a seminar was held on 6th August 2014 from 10.00 a.m. onwards at the M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium by the Department of Sinhala. Prof. Jinadasa Danansooriya, University of Kelaniya was the guest speaker of the event and Prof. Sarath Wijesooriya and Dr. Sandagomi Cooperahewa addressed the gathering.


Dr. P.B.F. Wijeratne – 25th Commemoration Ceremony

The 25th commemoration ceremony of former Editor in Chief of the Sinhala Dictionary, Dr.P.B.F.Wijeratne was held on 4th August 2014 at the M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium - the Department of Sinhala. The event was chaired by the Head of the Department of Sinhala- Ven. Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana and the inaugural speech was delivered by Dr.Sandagomi Cooperahewa. Emeritus Professor J.B. Dissanayake delivered the commemoration lecture and Ven. Thirikunamale Ananda and Ven. Dr. Akuratiye Nanda also addressed the gathering.


3rd Annual Research Symposium - 2013

The 3rd Annual Research symposium organized by the Department of Sinhala was held successfully on 9th October 2013 at the department premises. The inaugural session was headed by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor and the Dean Arts. This session was concluded with the key note address delivered by Senior Professor. Kulathilaka Kumarasinghe.
Symposium which consisted of eight parallel sessions was successful with the active participation of numerous academics of which represented every local university.
Meantime, the 2nd Annual Research Journal of the department was also launched at the event.

Short Drama Festival - 2013

A Short Drama Festival organized by the Department of Sinhala which presented by ADIC organization was held on 22nd August 2013 from 3.00 pm onwards at the New Arts Theater (NAT).


Inauguration of Diploma in Sinhala programme- 2013

Inauguration ceremony of the Sinhala Diploma Program was held on 17th August 2013 at the Department of Sinhala Auditorium. The event occurred with the participation of the Vice Chancellor Dr. Kumar Hirimburegama, Prof. Premakumara De Silva- Deputy vice chancellor, Dean and other distinguish guests. Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya, and Head of the Department Rev. Agalakada Sirisumana was also addressed the gathering.




A Contemporary Discourse on Modern Trends in Sinhalese Songs

A Contemporary Discourse on Modern Trends in Sinhalese Songs ("Premaya, Nuthana Geethaya, Sanskruthika Kathikawak ") with reference to the love and culture was held on 13th August 2013 at 3.00 pm onwards at the Department of Sinhala Auditorium. Event was organized by the Department of Sinhala. Senior journalist and lyricist Samudra Weththasinghe shared his ideas and Visharada Snaju Rukshan performed at the event.


Professor Hemapala Wijayawardene Memorial Trophy Debate Competition- 2013

The first ever inter departmental debate competition organized by Department of Sinhala was held from 24th July- 29th July 2013 at the faculty premises. Students from Sinhala Special degree second year were organized this event under the supervision of Rev. Agalakada Sirisumana Head of the Department. Teams nominated by every department of the Faculty of Arts were contested on this event.


Preaching Ceremony

A preaching ceremony took place at the department of Sinhala, by Rev. Thalalle Chandrakiththi, head of the Narada Buddhist Centre, Colombo on 24th of July 2013, at 09.00am. This event was organized in order to attain blessings for the department, students and the staff.


G.B. Senanayaka Centenary commemoration ceremony- 2013

In retrospection of late literate G. B. Senanayaka, the centenary commemoration was held on 15th July 2013 from 9.30 a.m. onwards at the Department of Sinhala Auditorium. An academic session was also organized parallel to this event. Being understood the opportune need of such celebration , the Department of Sinhala had been taken this decision. As a well-known writer in both Poetry and Prose, G.B. Senanayaka placed his signs in local literature arena.
The inaugural session was chaired by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dean, Head of the Department and Prof. Sunanda Mahendra whom delivered the keynote address. Followed by the inaugural two academic sessions were also held. Prof. Ananda Thissa Kumara and Prof. AnuraWickramasinge chaired these sessions and Prof. Jayantha Amarasinghe, Rev.Dr. Olaganwatte Chandrasara, Dr. Sandagomi Coperahewa and Gamini WIyangoda were the presenters. Session concluded by valedictory remarks given by Prof. Sarath Wijesooriya.


Buddhist Studies Public Seminar Series No.2 - 2013

Buddhist Studies Program in association with Sinhala Studies Seminar presented 'Moralism of Subhasitaya as a Response to Colonialism' by Professor Steven Berkwitz ( of Department of Religious Studies, Missouri State University, USA) at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Department of Sinhala, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo at 3.00 P.M. on Thursday 4th, July 2013..

Dr. Stephen C. Berkwitz is Professor and Head of Religious Studies at Missouri State University. He is a former Fulbright Student and Scholar who studied in Sri Lanka from 1995-1997 and 2005. He is the author or editor of six books including Buddhist History in the Vernacular: The Power of the Past in Late Medieval Sri Lanka (Brill, 2004), The History of the Buddha's Relic Shrine: A Translation of the Sinhala Thupavamsa_ (Oxford University Press, 2007), _South Asian Buddhism: A Survey (Routledge, 2009), and Buddhist Poetry and Colonialism: Alagiyavanna and the Portuguese in Sri Lanka (Oxford University Press, 2013). He does research on Sri Lankan Buddhism, Sinhala and Pali Literature, and Modern Buddhism.




Annual Staff Trip - 2013

Academic and support staff of the Department of Sinhala went on their annual department trip to Kukuleganga on the 31st May 2013. Lead by the department head Rev. Agalakada Sirisumana thero, staff members of the department and the members of their family joined in the trip to enjoy the fabulous beauty of the surrounding environment and settings of the Kukuleganga Holiday Resort.

Educational visit of 2nd year Special (Sinhala) undergraduates to the Martin Wickramasinghe falk art museum

Sinhala department annually welcome a group of students who wish to follow Sinhala special program with an unforgettable experience. This year, they were brought to the Martin Wickramasinghe falk art museum in Galle and they were provided with the knowledge on the Sinhala culture, art and craft. Both students and academic staff joined in the trip and a group of Chinese visiting students who had been following a three month Sinhala academic program at the department participated.


A Public Discussion on New Trends in Modern Day Drama (adyathana Natya Kalawe Nawa Prawanatha) postscript to the State Drama Festival 2012 / 2013

A public discussion on the new trends in modern day drama, organized by the Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo was held on 08th May 2013 at the Department M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium. Event was organized parallel to the Vindana Arts and Cultural Festival of University of Colombo. , This event was scheduled as a postscript to the state Drama Festival 2012/2013. Senior Lecturer Prasannajith Abeysuriya, well-known dramatist Piyal Kariyawasam and Assistant Lecturer Osanda Gunarathne provided their ideas at the event as guest speakers.


Undergraduate Research Symposium- 2013

Undergraduate Research Symposium - 2013 of the Department of Sinhala was held on 02nd May 2013 at the Department of Sinhala, M. B. Ariyapala Auditorium. For the first time this symposium was organized by the Department of Sinhala, enhancing the research ability and proficiency of undergraduates. Selected papers from the final year undergraduates were presented at the sessions chaired by pioneering professors in the field.

This symposium was organized as a part of the final year dissertation of the undergraduate which should be submitted at the end of their bachelor’s degree, under the supervision of Rev. Agalakada Sirisumana, Head of the Department and Dr. Sandagomi Coperahewa, Senior Lecturer.

Inauguration ceremony was held 09.30 a.m. and the keynote speech was delivered by Professor. Jayadewa Uyangoda. There were four sessions chaired by four professors was held afterwards under following research subfields.

Cultural and Folklore Studies- Professor Walter Marasinghe

Modern Sinhala Poetry- Emeritus Professor Kusuma Karunarathne

All sessions were consisted with 10 minutes discussion time and a chairperson briefing. The symposium was vined by a valedictory remarks delivered by Dr. Sandagomi Coperahewa.

Launching of Sinhabahu Memorial Volume- 2013 ('Sinhabahuta Panas Wasak')

Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo, proudly launched the commemoration volume for the 50th Anniversary of the Great Sri Lankan Drama 'Sinhabahu' a historical play created by late Prof. Ediriveera Sarathchandra. The event was held in 27th March 2013 at New Arts Theater of University of Colombo with the presence of Dr. Lalitha Sarathchandra and other distinguish guests. Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya, Mr Jayalath Manorathna and Prof. K.N.O. Dharmadasa spoke about the drama and its legend. Rev. Agalakada Sirisumana Head of the Department delivered the welcome speech while the Simhabahu Crew coloured the evening by their performances. The volume was edited by Dilum Rathnamala and K. V. D. Lakshani form Department of Sinhala, where Lakshani herself is a member of the present Drama crew of Sinhabahu, playing the role of Sinha Seevali .






Inter-University Best Lyricist award in Kavitha Talent Competition- 2013

Dinithi Uthpala Ransinghe, a final year undergraduate from the Department of Sinhala, Faculty of Arts was awarded as the Best Lyricist of the year at Kavitha Talent Compitition 2013, the first most All University Arts and cultural competition conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education recently. She received this title being selected as such among thousands of university students who took part in this event. She also received merit certificate for the category of poetry at the same event.

Dinithi, is an outstanding undergraduate who specialise Sinhala as her major affiliated to the Department of Sinhala. She entered to the University of Colombo for her higher studies after completing her studies at Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha.
