On behalf of the Department of Sociology, University of Colombo let me welcome you to our web page. The Department of Sociology has a history of more than forty years commencing from 1969 with the leadership of Professor Laksiri Jayasuriya, who is presently an Emeritus Professor at the University of Western Australia with only three lecturers and thirteen students. However, today the department has expanded and developed into one of the best departments of sociology in the Sri Lankan Universities. At present the department has a well qualified staff of 17 permanent lecturers with a student population of nearly 1000. Our department offers a unique degree programme in Sociology with a combination of disciplines such as Social Anthropology, Psychology and Social Work with a broad knowledge base which makes our students competent graduates. We are mindful to provide our students a sound foundation on theory, research methodology and field based training in relevant areas of study. While our main concern is undergraduate teaching we make every effort to offer postgraduate courses that are recognised for their academic standards.
