Registrar, Academic & Publications Branch, University of Colombo, 94, Cumaratunga Munidasa Mawatha, Colombo 03. Name of the course should be written on the top left hand corner of the envelope. Duly completed application forms must be accompanied with the paying-in-voucher for the application fee of Rs. 1,000/= and should be submitted on or before 27 August 2010 to the Senior Asst. Registrar, Academic & Publications Branch, University of Colombo, 94, Cumaratunga Munidasa Mawatha, Colombo 03.The payment of non refundable fee can be made at any branch of the People’s Bank to credit of the University of Colombo account number 086-100-121189662 by the paying-in-voucher issued by the University.

The MA Program in Sociology is designed to give a wider academic training within the discipline of sociology for those who already have a sound basic background in sociology or social anthropology. Unlike many similar programs in the country, the MA Program in Sociology at Colombo University is based on the premise that a comprehensive training in sociology must focus on both subject knowledge as well as research. Grounded upon this conviction, the MA program offers candidates a number of core courses which we believe are essential for a sound advanced training in sociology along with a number of other specialized subjects that students can select based on their own interests.

In the first year, once the course work is over, candidates are expected to undertake one year of research on the basis of a topic and research design that they have already come up with which has been approved by the Department. Throughout the planning and the implementation of the research process, the Department will provide input to the candidates through the supervisors assigned to each candidate. We expect all candidates to cultivate a close intellectual relationship with their supervisors to ensure the successful completion of their research, maintaining rigorous theoretical and methodological standards, and finally to produce a text in the form of a dissertation that would indicate excellence in knowledge production. We hope the intellectual climate offered by the Department beyond classes and supervisory input would be utilized creatively by candidates.
