After establishing the Sociology Alumni Association - University of Colombo, the first event organized by the Association in Collaboration with the Department of Sociology was to organize the Newton Gunasinghe Memorial Lecture – 2009 on the 22nd October 2009 at the Auditorium of the National Library and Documentation Services Board, in Colombo. The memorial lecture was delivered by Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam on the theme ‘A Reading of Politics and History of 20th Century Dancing in Sri Lanka’.
The Newton Gunasinghe Memorial Lecture – 2012 was organized by the Department of Sociology, University of Colombo in collaboration with the Sociology Alumni Association of the University of Colombo (SAAUC) and the Social Scientists Association (SSA). The lecture was held on the 2nd November 2012 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo. The principal sponsor for the Memorial Lecture was the State Mortgage and Investment Bank (SMIB). Prof. Rohan Bastin spoke on the topic “Cultural Survivals and Reactivations: Thinking about State and Religion in South Asia”. Prof. Bastin is the Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Deakin University, Australia. There were approximately 150 participants who participated in the Memorial Lecture.
