The Department of Sociology conducts monthly Seminar Series on contemporary topics by different scholars and researchers. Eminent scholars, postgraduate students and affiliated researchers constitute resource persons who speak at the Seminar Series conducted by theDepartment.
The most recent seminar was conducted by Dominic Esler, a visiting postgraduate student at the Department of Sociology who presented his research findings at the Department of Sociology, Seminar Series held on the 30th April 2014 at the Department Seminar Room. The title of his presentation was “Understanding Village Communities and Inter Networks: Notes from Fieldwork with Tamil and Muslim Farmersin Postwar Mannar.”
Dominic Esler is a PhD candidate in the Anthropology Department, University College London and a visiting student at the Department of Sociology, University of Colombo. He is currently conducting ethnographic fieldwork in mainland Mannar, where he is exploring the farming economy and rural sociality, interethnic relations, kinship, caste and religion.
This seminar presented ethnographic insights into postwar communities in Mannar and the changing dynamics within village communities.
