Post Graduate Diploma Courses

The Post Graduate Diploma in Education ( Sinhala and Tamil media)

This is a one-year professional course for graduate teachers and others in the field of education. Courses are conducted in the Sinhala and Tamil media for candidates selected by the Ministry of Education by a competitive entrance examination. From the academic year 1991-92, this course is also being offered in the Sinhala medium, at four regional centers. It is conducted by the academic staff members of the Faculty of Education, by face to face teaching, over the week-ends. This programme has enabled teachers serving in the regions gain professional training while in service, without obtaining study leave. Three thousand two hundred teachers have pursued the course in the regional centers so far.

The Post Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English as a Second Language course is a one-year professional course for teachers and English Instructors in Universities and other tertiary education institutions.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Educational and Psychological Assessment is a one-year course introduced in 1986 to meet the higher education needs of personnel in the area of assessment, in educational and other fields.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Community Development is a one-year course intended to enhance the capability of personnel engaged in numerous capacities in the field of community development.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling course was introduced in 1994 to meet the need for professional counsellors as well as the further education needs of those already engaged in the field of counselling.

Higher Degree Courses

Three higher degree courses are offered to meet the higher education needs of teachers and other professionals in the field of education, who wish to proceed beyond the Post graduate Diploma in Education.

The Master of Education Degree:
To fulfill the requirements of this course candidate must pass the final written examination in a specified number of subjects as well as submit assignments in each of those subjects. The Master of Education course conducted full time is of a year's duration while the part-time course is of one and a half year's duration.

The Master of Philosophy in Education

To fulfill the requirements of this course leading to a research degree candidate must pass the final written examination in a specified number of subjects as well as submit a dissertation in a selected field of research.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education

The highest degree offered by the Faculty of Education is that of the Doctor of Philosophy Candidates must engage in intensive research in a selected area of study under the guidance of a supervisor appointed by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Education and submit dissertation to the University of Colombo.
