Management

The Board of Management comprises of the representatives of the Ministries of Higher Education, Education, Science and Research, University Grants Commission, Standing Committee of Library and Information Services (SCOLIS) of UGC, University of Colombo, National Library and Documentation Services Board, Sri Lanka Library Association. The Academic Committee and the Higher Degrees Committee oversee the academic programmes of the institute. Director/NILIS is the chief administrative and academic officer of the institute.

Postgraduate Programmes 

Postgraduate Diploma in Teacher Librarianship (PGTL) and Masters in Teacher Librarianship (MTL) were commenced in 2000. Teacher Librarians and School Librarians attached to schools, Colleges of Education and other organizations in the Ministry of Education have the opportunity to obtain their postgraduate training under these programmes. In addition teacher/school librarians attached to the private sector organizations or International schools too have the opportunity to join the programme. Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science part time programme facilitates the working librarians to pursue their higher studies. Masters in Library Science (MLS) programme conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies of University of Colombo was transfered to the NILIS in 2006. This two year Masters programme with one year research component is especially designed for the library staff of universities and research institutes. MPhil/PhD programme was commenced in 2007. This is the first MPhil/PhD programme in Library and Information Science field in the country. A number of new academic programmes are being developed at present. Masters and Diploma programme in Information Management are in the top of the list at present and hopefully will be introduced in 2011. In addition the revisions of the syllabuses of a number of academic programmes are underway.
