My research placement experience at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka
I did my research placement at the University of Colombo, May to June 2010. I did enjoy carrying out my research work in Sri Lanka over this period which was filled with wonderful experiences in the cities of Colombo and Kandy. I was welcomed very warmly to the friendly department of Community Medicine of the University of Colombo.
I received support not only from my designated supervisor, Dr. Carukshi Arambepola but also from the entire department. This allowed me to get my project done as the support ranged from office support such as internet and library access to my academic work and research. I received training in the department on data analysis using the SPSS statistical software. My supervisor worked with me closely at each stage of the project.
The department assigned me a Research Assistant, Dr. Amali Ruwanchinthani. She and others in the department assisted me in my project such as translating questionnaires into the local language and helping me to get to different government offices in Sri Lanka where I was scheduled to carry out Key Informant Interviews. I became close friends with them and other members of the department and this was very easy because Sri Lankans are warm, friendly and welcoming and I discovered this even more on a trip to the Central part of the island, where I visited the beautiful town of Kandy.
