Welcome Message from the Head

 

It is with pleasure that I invite you to the website of the department. The department is responsible for the organization and implementation of the undergraduate Community Stream teaching programme spanning the five years of the curriculum. The academic staff also teaches in the Applied Sciences, Behavioural and Clinical Sciences Stream. The department is a Training Unit for Registrars in Community Medicine who are undertaking the MD Part II training for period of about two years. An undergraduate elective for foreign students, as well as for postgraduates in field based training, community perspectives and experiences in low cost and effective primary health care,  in research and other subjects in Community Medicine, are on offer. Kotte Health Unit (Medical Officer of Health area) is the health practice area where undergraduate, postgraduate and elective students gain experience of field-based delivery of health care and carry out research. The department is responsible for the services delivery in the Kotte Health Unit along with the Ministry of Health staff.  The Health Systems Research Unit and Occupational Health Unit function under the department and enable us to focus more on these issues. I welcome you to study our research experiences and output, training opportunities through extension courses and a multitude of other events and experiences.
