The frontiers of knowledge and technology in medicine and biosciences research have advanced with unprecedented speed, challenging doctors and scientists with each passing year. Present day breakthrough discoveries have confirmed the need for specialists in distant fields to work more closely, thereby blurring the interstices between disciplines.
The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, established in 1870 and considered the undisputed matriarch of medical education in Sri Lanka has been a leader in medical training and research not only in this country but also in Asia. Our teaching faculty in Colombo is comprised of some of the most accomplished, ambitious and dedicated scientists and medical professionals in Asia. Students always strive to grow and evolve and our faculty does provide them an innovative learning environment that imparts the refined skills of how to be compassionate and caring.
This faculty is in the forefront of medical education and has central to its mission, a curriculum that melds the study of basic science, pathophysiology and mechanisms of disease and the clinical practice of medicine into a cohesive programme of learning. This foundation is further reinforced by individualized research during an elective attachment that allows the students to pursue a deeper understanding of the ideas that inspire them. The vibrant curricular activities and responsibilities spread beyond those of a traditional medical school. It includes the acquisition of proper professional communication skills and the practice of acquired clinical skills in the community. In addition, the availability of academic degrees in Physiotherapy and Pharmacy in the field of allied health sciences has added a new dimension to the training of personnel in these specialties, thereby filling a long felt hiatus in the health needs of the country.
Of all the marvelous aspects of the Colombo experience, none is more vital or valuable to us than the diverse and devoted students who contribute so much to one another, to the life in the faculty and to the future of health care in this country.
I encourage you to visit us on the web or in the faculty and discover more about the academic and research facilities we provide.
