Community Service Delivery Programme
The Department delivers a diagnostic histopathology and cytology sevice to the Professorial wards of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka,De Soysa Maternity Hospital for Women, (wards 41,48,18,6,30,39)and specialized units such as skin (ward 13) and Urological Surgery(ward 22,30)at the NHSL.
In 2007, 2982 surgical biopsies, 354 cytology specimens and 48 postmortems were reported.
Immunohistochemistry
Immunohistochemical Markers essential to diagnose tumours & breast prognostic markers are done in the laboratory.
A fee levying service has been developed for the tests done in this lab & a number of outside biopsies are being handled each year.
The income generated out of this is deposited in the Departmental Development Fund (Immunohistochemistry).
This work is supervised by Prof.M.D.S.Lokuhetty.
Haematology
The following services are available at the haematology section.
- Full blood count
- Blood picture
- Reticulocyte count
- Bone marrow biopsies
- Special tests - PNH, G6PD deficiency, Hereditary spherocytosis
Diangnosis of referral cases
The department reports on difficult histology and haematology cases referred by other consultants.Referrals are received from National Hospital of Sri Lanka,General Hospitals-Rathapura,Kegalle,Sri Jayawardenapura.Base Hospital Gampaha,Cancer Institute-Maharagama,Teaching Hospital-Karapitiya & Teaching Hospital-Peradeniya,Medical Research Institute and Medical Faculty,Sri Jayawardenapura.
During the year 2007, 102 histology referral cases were reported.
Perinatal Pathology
Perinatal pathology is another service provided by the Department of Pathology. Currently Dr.A.A Priyani is involved in performing perinatal postmortems.
More than 30 post mortems were done during the last 6 months of year 2007 and the findings were presented to monthly perinatal clinical meetings at DMH.
