About Us
With its origin dating back to 1870, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo is the oldest medical school in the country and is also the second oldest medical school in South Asia. The Department of Surgery was one of the first departments to be established in the Faculty of Medicine.
The Department of Surgery has one professor holding the Chair in Surgery, one merit professor, five senior lecturers, one lecturer in surgery and one senior lecturer in anaesthesiology. In addition, at any given time, there are postgraduate trainees (i.e. registrars and senior registrars) undergoing training who are affiliated to the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), Sri Lanka. At present, there are several doctors conducting research work leading to Doctor of Medicine (DM) degree by research.
