Our services can be broadly categorized in to Medico Legal and |

| Are your services available island wide? |
| We mainly cover six police areas which are – Wellampitiya, Walikada, Athurugiriya, Thalangama, Nawagamuwa, |
| Mulleriyawa. But on special request we would undertake autopsy or any other medico legal procedure in |
| any part of the country |
| What are the instances that require an autopsy? |
| Autopsies are carried out according to regulations laid out in the Criminal Procedure Code. Under sections |
| 369-373 states that autopsies should be carried out in cases of : |
| * Suicide |
| * Killed by animal or by machinery or by an accident |
| * Died suddenly or from a cause which is not known |
| * When a person dies in custody or in an institution eg: Mental or Leprosy hospital |
| * Homicide |
| * Maternal deaths |
| * Death under an aesthesia or during surgery |
| * Alleged medical negligence |
| How can a patient be referred to your department? |
| From the above mentioned six police areas patients are referred with medico legal Examination Forms |
| (MLEF) either directly from relevant police areas or hospital. Without MLEF patients are also referred |
| by Consultants eg: in suspected child abuse. |
| Can we get help in a case of child abuse / domestic violence? |
| We do not initiate the Medico Legal procedures in case of child abuse / domestic violence. Medico Legal |
| service are provided through referral from appropriate authorities. Our objective is to provide an impartial |
| examination and reporting of the alleged offense. In above situations National Child Protection Authority |
| or womens' desk of the police should be informed respectively. |

| We have courses at under - graduate and post - graduate level as well as extended programmes for |

| Yes. Our academic staff members conduct research activities. And assist any other individuals, institutions |
| in conducting research. |

| Our specimens are lent under university regulations. Further details can be obtained from the department. |
