Schools
Education in Human Rights is
the primary objective of the CSHR. Many of its education projects are initiated
with the belief that a society well informed about its rights could promote and
sustain democratic governance and peaceful co-existence.
Targeting
secondary school students, the programme is designed to teach human rights in a
non-formal manner, thus enabling participants to integrate human rights
values into their day-to-day activities. The rationale is that today's children
constitute the core citizens of the first couple of decades of the 21st century
and they need to be aware of the different dimensions of human rights. This
programme has three goals: creating awareness of human rights, forming correct
attitudes and developing skills relative to the school curriculum.
The
role of the CSHR is planning activities to achieve set objectives, training of
trainers, providing facilities, guidance and supervision and undertaking
continuous assessment of projects. The programme, to be undertaken by students
about to leave school after their GCE Ordinary Level & Advanced Level
examinations, is field based, activity oriented and directed towards self
training. The students are first exposed to various dimensions of human rights
by the trained teachers. Then they are encouraged and facilitated to go out to
the field in their respective areas to meet with relevant authorities to
identify and analyze human rights issues facing their community. Thus, meeting
not only the protectors of human rights but the violated and also violators,
they are trained to assess issues from various standpoints.
This
programme introduces the concept of resolution of conflicts through non-violent
means, stressing the importance of the analysis of conflicts, identification of
their causes and identifying methods of peaceful resolution. The methodology
used includes role play, interaction, discussion & self-deduction. There is
no teaching involved. Workshops are conducted by the staff trained in
non-violent conflict resolution methodology.
Targeted
goals:
- To impress upon participants that,
Conflicts are personal, national, regional and international in dimension;
Analysis of a conflict facilities its resolution;
Conflict resolution entails communication, cooperation and affirmation;
- To impart necessary skills.
