Universities
The
objective of the Human Rights Law Course offered to final year students of the
Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, is to provide in-depth understanding of
legal protection of human rights, multy-dimensionally.It also aims at enabling
students to assess the Sri Lankan legal system within the framework of
international developments in human rights protection.
The
Diploma in Human Rights has been designed to provide a structured understanding
of human rights activities. It is designed and conducted by the CSHR, and
offered through the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. It comprises of an
introduction to human rights law and a comprehensive study of political,
economic and sociological dimensions of human rights issues.
The
beneficiaries of this programme are students of the Faculty of Law, University of
Colombo, the Law College, and the Law Division of the Open University of Sri
Lanka. Those interested in human rights but have not been able to receive
proper guidance in human rights protection and promotional activities are
specially targeted. The CSHR collaborates with the Movement for the Defense of
Democratic Rights (MDDR) in conducting this programme.
This
programme is designed to provide practical training to university students who
have obtained theoretical knowledge of the subject and are deeply committed to
the promotion of human rights. The interns, in general, receive hands-on
experience in practical human rights activities of a multi-disciplinary nature
and gain insight into the local NGO movement. They also make contacts within
the human rights community, and acquire advocacy and strategizing skills.
All
interns carry out individual research as part of their training and submit
reports at the end of their training period. The interns at the CSHR assist in
organizing seminars and workshops, guest lectures and monthly interns'
meetings. They also participate in human rights training programmes for which
CSHR is invited and visit schools and community centres.
Until
the end of 1999, the CSHR made strong attempts to incorporate human rights
components to university students through the framework of the formal education
system. Based on the experience gathered during those years, we have formulated the above programme with a slightly different format.
