| Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology(IBMBB) was established by a soft loan provided by the Swedish Development Agency(SIDA) as an expansion activity of capacity building in Biotechnology supported by SAREC. | ||||||||||

| The IBMBB is fully equipped with the state of the art instruments to carry out advance research in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology relevant to the development of Sri Lanka. Several research programmes are currently in progress in the areas of Biomedical Sciences and Plant Molecular Biology. Our other aim is to contribute to human resource development at MSc/MPhil/PhD level in disciplines related to biotechnology. |

| In order to achieve these goals the IBMBB conducts two MSc courses.All courses are fee levying programmes. |  |

| 1.MSc in Molecular Life Sciences | ||||||||||
| This is a three semester programme. Each semester will run for 20 weeks. The course is designed to provide an advanced training in branches of molecular life sciences with one semester research project. | ||||||||||
| Eligibility : Graduates in Biological/Medical/Dental/Veterinary/Agricultural Sciences | ||||||||||
| Course fee : Rs. 220,000/= to be paid before registration(non-refundable) | ||||||||||
| 2. MSc in Cellular and Molecular Immunology | ||||||||||
| This is a three semester course of 20 weeks duration each. The course is designed to provide a strong foundation in molecular and cellular immunology and a research component. The research component is organized to offer training in research methodologies. | ||||||||||
| Eligibility : Graduates in Biological/Medical/Dental/Veterinary/Agricultural Sciences | ||||||||||
| Course fee : Rs. 220,000/= to be paid before registration(non-refundable) | ||||||||||
| Candidates for the above MSc courses will be required to sit for an admission examination for which a fee of Rs. 500.00 (non-refundable) will be charged. | ||||||||||
| 3. MPhil/PhD programmes | ||||||||||
| There are also opportunities to pursue MPhil/PhD programmes. | ||||||||||

At present there are several areas where MPhil/PhD programmes could be undertaken. These include molecular/biochemical parasitology, molecular genetics of cancer, molecular biology of reproduction/Endocrinology, plant molecular biology and molecular diagnostics. | |||||||||
| Successful completion of an MPhil/PhD programme requires two to three years of full time research. Eligible candidates are expected to have first or second class upper division honours in a relevant subject or an MSc in relevant field. In addition candidate may require to undertake prescribed courses available at the institute before registration. The registration will also depend on the availability of supervisors. All courses are fee levying programmes. | ||||||||||
| Course fee : Rs. 550,000.00 per annum to be paid at the beginning of each calendar year and non-refundable. Further information could be obtained from the director/IBMBB. | ||||||||||
| Short Cources in Molecular Biology | ||||||||||
| Certificate Course in Molecular Biological Techniques | ||||||||||
| Course is of 45 h duration and will consist of theory and practicals with hands on experience in DNA based techniques such as DNA extraction and quantification, PCR, RT-PCR, DNA probes, gel electrophoresis, restriction fragment length polymorphism and an exposure to DNA sequencing. Application of the techniques in diagnosis of pathogenic diseases, mutation detection etc will be discussed. | ||||||||||
| The course is designed for scientists, clinicians, academics, technical officers and students awaiting higher studies in biological sciences. Number of participants is limited to 20. Those who wish to participate are required to make a written application to the Director, IBMBB and a brief curriculum-vitae should be sent with the application and email to sar@ibmbb.cmb.ac.lk. | ||||||||||
