University Research Grants 2017

CALLING APPLICATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY RESEARCH GRANTS – 2017

University of Colombo announces the availability of funds for research, as part of its plans to inculcate research culture amongst staff/students and to upscale the high quality / impact research, which in turn would improve the institutional grading in the global university ranking system. The objectives of providing these funds are to increase the number of doctoral-level degrees (PhDs) produced by the institute, increase the number of scientific publications made in indexed journals and enhance the impact of research on issues that are relevant to national development hence the applicants are requested to make optimal utilization of the grants that are made available through the University of Colombo.

Research Grants are available under following four categories:

01. Collaborative research grant proposals

Competitive research grants (with a mandatory training component) will be awarded in varying disciplines, including:

  • Agro-technology
  • Basic Sciences
  • Biotechnology
  • Computer Science & Information Technology
  • Energy, Engineering Sciences & Architecture
  • Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources & Biodiversity
  • Food Sciences
  • Geology & Earth Sciences
  • Health Sciences
  • Nanotechnology
  • Library & Information Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Science Education
  • Science & Technology Policy Studies 

Eligibility:
Any Senior or Mid-career-level academic who has the knowledge and skills to carry out the proposed studies and who is willing to undertake the supervision of a research trainee(s) who would need to register for a research degree with the University of Colombo and successfully complete a doctoral-level research degree (Ph.D) within a maximum period of 5 years.

Budget and Duration:
Applicants may request up to SL Rs. 1,000,000.00 as annual cost for a period of performance of no more than 3 years.

02. Postgraduate Research Grants – Ph.D. (Junior-level academics -probationary lecturers)

Funds could be requested for research studies that would lead to a doctoral-level research degree (Ph.D.).

Eligibility:
Academics, Research Officers and Scientific Assistants (in the permanent cadre) who should register for a research degree with the University of Colombo with plans for successful completion of a doctoral-level research degree (Ph.D) within a maximum period of 5 years.

Budget and Duration:
Applicants may request up to SL Rs. 500,000.00 as annual cost for a period of performance of no more than 3 years.

03. Research Related Infrastructure Development Grants

Proposals which would improve the research output of the university, benefit largest number of researchers and which contribute to the national development would be considered for funding.

04. Small Research Grants

Purpose of small grant awards include the following:

  • To collect pilot data, to purchase research equipment or supplies, or the costs of smaller- scale projects.
  • For publications such as the costs of publishing, scholarly or artistic work (but NOT for publishing research articles/publications in journals)
  • For payment of copyright to photographs, drawings, figures or tables, or permissions to reprint.
  • For extension of ongoing research; though priority will be given for new projects.

Eligibility

Staff members who hold tenured positions in the university and who are eligible for the research allowance under Establishment Circular No 5/2014 (i) and 5/2014 (ii) dated 28.05.2014 and 30.05.2014 respectively.

Budget and Duration:
Applicants may request from SL Rs. 100,000.00 – 500,000.00 for a period performance of 3 months to 1 year.

Reporting:
Awardees will be required to submit biannual progress reports and financial statements.

Proposals submitted related to following categories will be given the priority (As per the Finance circular letter No. 07/2016)

1. Nationally relevant research
  a)  Chronic Kidney Diseases
  b)  Dengue
2. Scientific, Engineering & Information Technology related innovative research
3. Research into Demographic, Socio- cultural & Economic issues
4. Research relevant to industrial & Technological development & university industry linkage leading to innovative technological solutions

Note: 2

Current grant holders who plan to complete their studies and submit the final reports and financial statements before 31st December 2016 are also eligible to submit new applications. If such an application is selected for funding, evidence for completion of the previous grant and settlement of finances prior to the given deadline of 31.12.2016 would be needed before the new award is made.
